The basic definition comes from the International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA): “Virtual assistants are independent contractors who (from a remote location, usually their home or office) support multiple clients in a variety of industries by providing administrative, creative, and technical services.”
You have a small business. Maybe you have a commercial office, or, maybe, like me, you work from home. Either way, you may not have the space or money to add another desk, chair, filing cabinet, computer, printer, and all the other things required for an additional person.
As a virtual assistant and independent contractor working for you, I furnish all my own equipment and don’t take up space in your office. You only pay me when I’m actually doing work for you. I use a timekeeping program that is on when I am working. You don’t pay me when I’m taking a coffee break or on a call with someone not related to your business.
If you only need me for an hour or two a day, or a few hours a week, no problem! You don’t have to run a payroll just for me — no withholding, no payroll tax forms to file or payroll taxes to pay — just a 1099 MISC form once a year, and that’s only if you pay me more than $600 a year. Plus, my service costs are tax deductible, just like an attorney, accountant, or other professional service provider.
We communicate via phone, email, Skype, text message — however you prefer.
It really is a win/win for both of us. Think about it.
“I want to thank virtual assistant, Toni McNulty who has done an excellent job of proofreading the Online Profits System. She is incredibly fast and her notes were very easy to understand. She really helped to make short work of a huge task!” Cathy Wagner, One Stop Internet Business
“Wanted to thank you again for your help finding the book for Ruby. It really did seem to be an impossible and time costly search. But you were quick, saved me a lot of time, I had no idea how to go about searching for the book without a title or author. Thanks, you are the greatest at handling tasks that can bog us down and eat up valuable time. You’ve got my vote.” Heidi Caswell, Connect Simply
